The Basilica of the Annunciation

In the heart of Nazareth stands the Basilica of the Annunciation, one of the holiest sites in Christianity. This is the place where, according to tradition, the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would become the Mother of Jesus. Here, in humility and faith, Mary gave her “yes” to God’s plan, changing the course of history.

Descending into the grotto beneath the basilica, pilgrims stand before the words engraved in Latin:“Verbum caro hic factum est” – “Here the Word became flesh.”This is not only a memory of the past, but a living proclamation of the mystery of the Incarnation.

The modern basilica rises above ancient layers of churches, reminding us that faith has been alive here for centuries. The beautiful mosaics of Mary from around the world show how her obedience and love unite believers across cultures and nations.

For Catholic pilgrims, this site is an invitation to reflect on trust, humility, and openness to God’s will. Just as Mary welcomed Christ into her life, we are called to welcome Him into our hearts and daily actions.
